SCWT Named one of IGN’s Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All-Time

BobFM on the forums posted a link to IGN FilmForce’s “Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All-Time”–Sky Captain is #19 on the list, behind Forbidden Planet and followed by Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Todd Gilchrist, editor-in-chief of IGN DVD writes:

Sky Captain is the most imaginative family-oriented sci-fi movie since the original Star Wars, and boasts enough ideas to fill a dozen Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park and Star Wars movies for decades. The action is brisk, engaging, and dizzyingly staged; the story is jam-packed with clever concepts and novel ideas; and the characters, much like those discovered in a galaxy far, far away, are archetypes that prove uniquely compatible to the universe of future-primitive ideas that Conran creates.”

The complete list can be found here.

Fans will remember that Sky Captain was one of the few films to garner a 5-star rating from IGN FilmForce.

Happy Anniversary, Sky Captain

Today is September 17th, the same day that Sky Captain was released in the United States in 2004…so naturally, that means the movie is one year old today.

I realize I’ve been totally sucking at updating the site and such, but I will try to do something eventually. In the meantime, for any other lurkers out there who haven’t been to the forums, there are still people there you can talk to if you want. Also, trylon has graciously made an ‘unofficial’ chatroom for the movie, which everyone is encouraged to check out. You can do so here: http://iversonic.com/scwt/

Reference Checkers Wanted

Anyone who wants a way to contribute to the site, here’s your first chance! I’m looking for people to help me out with confirming the user-submitted references of the references section. As you can imagine, I haven’t seen every single thing that Sky Captain references, so I can’t say for sure if some references should be given a yes or a no, but there are probably some others who can. These people should have a pretty decent amount of experience with sci-fi or classic films, comic books, etc., obviously, as those are the types of things most likely to be referenced.

If you’re interested in helping out, join the forums (if you haven’t already) and send me (Alex) a PM. I’ll get back to you with the details. Thanks in advance!

Sky Captain ranks#2 in DVD sales

Sky Captain has ranked #2 on the DVD sales charts for the week ending January 30th! The widescreen DVD only lost out to Alien vs. Predator, which also opened on the same day. At the moment, I’m unable to find any actual numbers (amount of money earned, number of units sold), so anyone who’s got some would be much appreciated!

Meanwhile, in rentals, the movie ranked #3, earning $8.14 million. (source: IMDb)

Promo Playing Cards?

trylon writes on the forums:
“Ion [Thunderbird, another forum member] tipped me off to some playing cards with the Sky Captain logo being given out as free promos at DVD stores. Keep an eye out for them.”

As always, if I hear any more details I’ll post them.

Screencaps of the Original 6-minute Short

I’ve screencapped Kerry Conran’s original 6-minute short, which can be found on the DVD. There are about 60 caps in total, and I got about one cap for every shot in the short.

If you would like to see them, head on over to its album in the gallery here: TFL gallery
